Today Marvel (and Sony) released the second trailer for Spider-Man Homecoming. The first trailer showed that this is very much the Spider-Man we saw in Civil War. This trailer seems to be no exception.

The new trailer gives you more of a sense that Iron Man and Spider-Man butting heads will be a pretty heavy focus in the film. And it looks like they are going to use that as a reason to return him to the suit he was seen wearing in Civil War before meeting Iron Man. Making this a story about Spider-Man still learning how to become Spider-Man even after being Spider-Man, basically they figured out how to do a quasi origin story. Which fits nicely with the Spider-Man versus everyone vibe that the trailer seems to be throwing out there. It seems like the entire film is going to be about him proving himself which probably isn’t a bad thing.

There are a lot of small cool touches to this trailer which I’m sure will be throughout the movie. One of my favorites is the Captain America Fitness Test, which I vaguely remember being directly from the comics. There is also very briefly a robotic spider that raises a lot of questions. More than likely something of Iron Man’s doing.

One small touch that I’m somewhat not a big fan of is that it looks like they are using the alien weapon arc again. It’s fine I guess but I’ve grown tired of it, if you’ve watched almost everything Marvel has put out after The Avengers you will know that this is probably the third or fourth time this has happened. I like the idea that the events of The Avengers really changed the Marvel Cinematic Universe but I think a Spider-Man movie can do without it, especially one that already has Tony Stark. They already showed alien weaponry being used in the first trailer but that seemed small time and was a nice touch. But this shows that Vulture is definitely taking full advantage of the weaponry, making what happened in the Avengers a big part of this Spider-Man movie. Don’t get me wrong this definitely isn’t a huge deal but it would have been nice to see something more original or something that happened in a different Marvel film affect this one. I like the idea of Spider-Man being in the Marvel Cinematic Universe but that doesn’t mean his movies have to be littered with ideas and characters from the MCU. It seems obvious they are probably doing that to separate themselves from the previous Spider-Man series.

So far I still have high hopes for this movie and this trailer hasn’t changed my mind. It looks like it is shaping up to be a pretty good movie and as long as they keep Spider-Man similar to how he was in Civil War they have pretty much got his personality nailed, which is something the other series struggled with. If you are a Spider-Man fan this is definitely a movie to mark your calendars for.
